Aftercare Instructions for a Clean, Smooth Heal

Aftercare Instructions

Immediately After Getting Your Tattoo

Your tattoo has been covered with one of the following bandages to protect the fresh tattoo and promote healing.

Second Skin

  • Keep the bandage on for 3 to 5 days.
  • Avoid letting water or sweat get under it.
  • When it’s time to remove, do so carefully under the shower with lukewarm water.
  • If you notice swelling, redness, rash, or irritation, remove the bandage immediately.

In rare cases, Second Skin can cause a reaction similar to an allergy to band aids. Your artist will ask about this beforehand, but if a reaction occurs, take it off right away.

Absorbent Tattoo Pad, sometimes called a tattoo diaper

  • This bandage absorbs excess blood, plasma, and ink.
  • Leave it on for 2 to 3 hours, then remove it.

Plastic Wrap

  • This option is only meant for short use.
  • Leave it on for no more than 2 hours, then remove it.

After Removing the Bandage

Regardless of whether you had Second Skin, a tattoo pad, or plastic wrap

  • Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water or mild, fragrance free soap.
  • Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.

Ongoing Care

  • Apply a very thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment, for example Hustle Butter or CVS Health Healing Ointment.
  • Wash the tattoo twice a day with lukewarm water or mild, fragrance free soap.
  • Always keep the tattoo clean and lightly moisturized. Less is more.
  • Avoid tight, rough, or irritating clothing over the area.

Healing Time

Every body heals differently.

  • On average, the surface of the tattoo heals in about 2 weeks.
  • Deeper healing can take up to 8 weeks before the tattoo is fully settled.
  • Be patient and continue proper aftercare throughout this time.

What to Avoid

  • Do not soak the tattoo, no baths, pools, lakes, or hot tubs, until it is fully healed.
  • Avoid direct sun or tanning during the healing phase.
  • Do not scratch, peel, or pick at scabs or flaking skin. Let them come off naturally.

When to Seek Help

  • If you notice severe redness, swelling, pus, or ongoing pain, contact us or a doctor immediately.
  • If you suspect an allergic reaction or infection, do not wait. Have it checked right away.

Touch Ups

Once your tattoo is fully healed, you may schedule a touch up if needed. Your artist will advise you on the best timing.
